Caravan was created by the fall semester 2019 Poetry Now class at Boston University. The class read an anthology titled Bullets into Bells, I’m So Fine by Khadijah Queen, and Brute by Emily Skaja. These authors have influenced the classes’ poems and were used as inspiration when writing all assignments for Poetry Now. As part of the class, students were required to go to poetry events around the city of Boston. This helped provide them with a broader view of modern poetry and guided them when the time came to write their own work. These poems have been written over the course of the semester some in-class exercises and some out of class as a creative pursuit.
The class decided to name this Journal Caravan which historically means a group of people travelling together. The authors of the journal wish for their readers to be apart of their caravan and be on the imaginative journey with them. As well, the diverse group of authors in this journal resembles the way caravans were filled by merchants and jacks of all trades from diverse backgrounds. Each author provides a different insight as they have had a different experience before arriving at Boston University, a lot of that is reflected in their work that has been curated for this journal.
As publishers of Caravan, we would like to say how enormously proud we are of our peers and all the hard work they have put into the poems written. The poets’ vulnerability and courage are inspiring and profound and we hope you gain as much from these poems as we do. :)
